There is an oily-looking stain in the kitchen sink of a house that I am interested in purchasing…?
The stain looks like an oil slick in a parking lot. The water didn’t smell or taste funny. There was a huge water filtration system (like 6 ft. tall) but I don’t think it was on.
Does anybody know what would cause this?
And will the filtration system fix the water?
Thank you for the comet message. Thanks for the chuckle.
But I am more curious about the water rather than the sink.
Once again, thanks for the cleaning suggestion… I should be good in that department.

thats a water softener i expect and usually they are only hooked into the hot water, it might not work anyway, ours doesnt, it will be at least 500 dollars to replace that.

Is it well water? If it is check the other fixtures and see if the same oil film is on them. Or, pour up a large container of water and see if there is an oily film on them. Could be you are over a large oil deposit and the house will make you rich. I doubt that though. Likely someone poured something into the sink.

If it was only in the kitchen sink and not in the bathroom sink, toilet, or shower- I wouldn’t worry about it too much because you can always clean or replace the sink and it may have been something the "cook burned" and threw in the sink and ruined the sink with – if this stain is in all of the other water "fixtures" I would think very seriously about buying and fighting this problem for years to come – if you are not sure if it was in the other "fixtures" then ask to look at the home again – if you are interested in buying they will be happy for you to look at it one more time – and if you still don’t want it don’t worry about going to look at it twice – they can’t make you buy it
