What are all of the opportunities of environmental engineering?

I’m going into this field, and I really want to do something with water pollution, but working at a wastewater treatment plant isn’t really my first choice.

Please list as many things as possible for land, air, and water, not just water…thanks!

Is this what we'll see throughout the US if more immigration raids happen?

…..and how is it going to help out the economy? and create more jobs for Americans like the supporters of raids claim?

http://www.csmonitor.com/2009/0605/p17s08-usgn.html

How an immigration raid changed a town

The slaughterhouse is bankrupt. Scores of homes have been vacated by the workers who were either deported or thrown out of jobs. Retailers are shuttering businesses. Most telling of all, the city council has declared the town a disaster area.

Agriprocessors hired Jewish rabbis to kill each animal to kosher standards. Further processing was conducted by local hires, and when that pool was tapped out, the company turned to immigrants from Ukraine, Russia, Somalia, Mexico, Israel, and most notably Guatemala.

The ripple effects from the raid remain palpable in Postville – especially coming amid a virulent national recession. The town will likely default on a federal loan it took out to expand its wastewater treatment plant. Nearly 50 percent of the brick storefronts on the south edge of Lawler Street, as well as on adjoining Greene Street, lie vacant.
david, is that the attitude of some Americans?
"who cares how it affects the rest of America, as long as we see less people whom we assume are illegally here"?

Which of these ten examples stimulus waste has inspired Obama the most to make a 2nd stimulus package?

Ten examples of wasteful stimulus projects in the report include:

1. .5 million in “free” stimulus money for a new wastewater treatment plant results in higher utility costs for residents of Perkins, Oklahoma.
2. billion for FutureGen in Mattoon, Illinois is the “biggest earmark of all time” for a power plant that may never work.
3. million for “shovel-ready” repairs to little-used bridges in rural Wisconsin are given priority over widely used bridges that are structurally deficient.
4. 0,000 for little-used John Murtha Airport in Johnstown, Pennsylvania airport to repave a back-up runway; the ‘Airport for Nobody’ Has Already Received Tens of Millions in Taxpayer dollars.
5. .4 million for a wildlife “eco-passage” in Florida to take animals safely under a busy roadway.
6. Nevada non-profit gets million weatherization contract after recently being fired for same type of work.
7. .15 million for installation of a new guard rail for the non-existent Optima Lake in Oklahoma.
8. Nearly million to renovate an abandoned train station that hasn’t been used in 30 years.
9. 10,000 dead people get stimulus checks, but the Social Security Administration blames a tough deadline.
10. Town of Union, New York, encouraged to spend a 8,000 grant it did not request for a homelessness problem it claims it does not have.

Is this a preview of how the USA will look when president Obama is finished?

Altgeld Gardens looks like a war zone. From burned-out CHA structures to potholes deep enough to make streets unpassable, it looks and feels more like war-torn Baghdad than Chicago.

If you live in the housing project, off 130th Street on Chicago’s Far South Side, a few things are within convenient walking distance: A wastewater treatment plant, a rolling mountain range of Chicago’s garbage, a polluted river.

A decent grocery store, however, is three separate bus rides away.

This is where President Barack Obama did his community organizing

about reactions..?

i work in a wastewater treatment plant, we treat lead in water. does lead sulfate, lead chloride and lead ions react with hydrochloric acid?
we treat it by adding caustic soda to form lead hydroxide, does does lead sulfate and lead chloride react with caustic soda to form lead hydroxide?
then we add ferric sulfate as a coagulant, does lead sulfate, lead chloride and lead hydroxide react with ferric sulfate?
lead compounds are insoluble to water right?
we also add an anionic polymer to make the flocs more heavy to settle, but it does not work, you can see suspended flocs in the clarifier, does too much polymer affect the formation of flocs?
too much ferric sulfate makes the water yellowish.
we maintain the pH from 6 to 9.
and lead from about 6ppm to 0.2 ppm.
and the rate is 150 gpm.
and i think the flow is too much.

My coworker whom I have been training with smells like sh*t. What do I do?

We have been working together, she is training me, and today I have had it with the smell. For the past 3 days the overwelming stench of raw sewage mixed with fish has been throughout the control room where we work. I have tried to hint to her that we have showers in the plant we work at but she just wont shower. I mean today it smelt like fish wraped in a used condom all day. I just cant take it anymore. What do I do to get this skank to take a shower atleast ONCE a week. I mean can I be subtle and just like leave some body wash lying around or do I just tell this what seems to be a woman to take a shower. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS. We work in a wastewater treatment plant, but I do not smell like this. I think she swims in the influent.
By the way Lins, if that is you real name. The only way I know how it smells because I know what your breath smells like.
PPS.

Precious H, should be more like Preperation H. Your mother was a hamster and your hemeroids are the size of elderberries. Two against one is not fair. Snow P is on his own here, Papa P once told this young grasshopper that the cord had to be cut sometime.

Closure/Post Closure Plan for Solid Waste Permit Renewal?

I’m working on a solid waste disposal permit renewal for a wastewater treatment plant in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The person from the PA DEP said that we need a closure/post closure plan (form 28) for the renewal.

Our last renewal of this kind for this plant (done 10 years ago) did not include one. I don’t believe we actually need one as there is no longer a landfill in use on the site (the landfill was properly closed/contained 20 years ago). The solid waste is now hauled to an approved landfill offsite. Do closure/post closure plans only apply to landfills, or am I mistaken in my understanding of it?

Stop at Master's or go for PhD?

I’m going back to school for my master’s degree this Fall (I’m 24 years old), and have been given the opportunity to finish the 4-5 year research project I was assigned and get a PhD. I’m an environmental engineer with a concentration in wastewater treatment.

On the one hand, I’d like to do actual engineering design (e.g choose a type of wastewater treatment plant, make the plans for it, and see it realized), which I could do with a master’s degree. I heard that PhD’s aren’t usually hired for this kind of work, and are actually at a disadvantage because they start at a higher (and therefore undesirable) pay range. I could see myself opening a branch of the company that hires me some day, and would be very satisfied with that kind of life.

On the other hand, I like the idea of being an instrument of progress. I want to move knowledge forward, even if it’s only by a small amount. However, I’m worried that I’ll be restricted to only a few government agencies like the EPA, and fewer labs that exist than companies that do engineering design. Is it true that there is less opportunity for a researcher than there is for a professional with a master’s degree? I’d like to teach at a university some day (if I chose the PhD path), but this would come later in life.

I’m basically looking for information that would help me weigh out these choices. Give me pros or cons of each, or tell me flat out why I should choose one over the other. Thanks for your help!

would this be hydro eletric?

take the rear end of a large vehicle put it in the discharge from my local wastewater treatment plant on a floating platform then use the rotation of the paddled wheels to turn a genorator.my local plannt releases 6 million gallons a day
if six inches of flood water can wash my car down the street then theres all kind of power there
