Why are so many fuel filters so expensive?

I have been doing maintenance on my motorcycle for years. I’m used to the -5 inline fuel filters, which I also had on my first couple cars. But now I’m trying to diagnose a misfire issue on my Honda Civic (97 EX) and the fuel filter is the next thing to check. I was surprised to see that even the cheapest available that are specified for this application are . Most brands are closer to . What in the world is this filter doing that a filter doesn’t? Can’t be the fuel flow because I’ve seen plenty of gas hog V8s that use simple inline filters, while my gas-sipping Civic needs something special. I also wouldn’t think the filtration is that much different. I mean, it’s fuel, not oil or drinking water. There’s a prefilter in the fuel tank for the really ugly crap, then this one for the fine stuff.

So what is it? Can I just put a general purpose inline filter in place of the ridiculously complicated Civic one?

nissan 50 hp tldi maintenance?

We recently purchased a Macgregor 26m with a Nissan 50 tldi nsd50b. The sticker on the motor has the 2003 marked. We had some problems with the motor at Lake Powell, ( missing at various RPMs, having trouble throttleing up fast etc. , at Lake Tahoe the motor ran even worse , not wanting to go above about 2000 rpm and then eventually not even holding an idle) This started me looking at what I might do to be sure fuel delivery is not the issue. I decided to clean the vapor separator on my Nissan and that got me thinking what else may have crud in it on a 5 + year old motor. What can you tell me about cleaning the strainer on the fuel regulator or air regulator? The shop manual only says clean it if foreign matter is present. There are no instructions on how to remove and clean these. The manual makes it look pretty straight forward, just unbolt and remove a plate but the strainer is not shown. Are these strainers only cleaned as a last resort to some troubleshooting or would the cleaning be part of preventative maintenance?
Also is there anything else that is replaced before it fails like the thermostat, fuel, air or oil filters, or the high pressure fuel filter? The motor is five ears old
I have also seen online discussions that mention that the tldi around 2003 may not have had it’s ECU programmed for high altitudes? Any truth in this, any way for me to check?

Flat bed diesel truck engine idles ok but will not accelerate, let out large smoke?

Drained tank found dark color fluid like used oil. Replaced with new diesel. Oil dirty but at good level. Let truck sit for less than hour. On the road it took off ok but began to refuse to accelerate and intermitently came to a near stop with engine still idling. When it reved up, very little and every few seconds even more difficult going up slight uphill. Managed to crawl about 5 miles to get closer to home.
Next day bled 4 injectors, removed.small (air hose?) near oil to alternator tube. Truck ran for about two miles then repeat same. Drained fuel filter/water separator? with primer pump. Found sludge. Did not change filter. Only cleaned and primed.Tried driving it, same. Help.

I have a Maxum boat with a 5.7L Mercruiser that stalls around 3500 rpm?

When it stalls it keeps running but drops to 1000 rpm. (Of course, when it’s running in the slip it’s fine!) The computer said to replace the IAC, which I did; then it said it was an oil sensor, which I also replaced. Also checked the fuel water separator, removed an aftermarket 2nd fuel filter, and replaced the main fuel filter. Ran a pressure check on the fuel line and everything looked OK….except that none of this has worked! Any thoughts?

Ford f150 coolant temperature sensor problem?

I have an 89 F150 FWD 4.9L that broke down about a week ago. It was running great than it stalled, started throwing black smoke and then died. It was getting too much fuel. I replaced the fuel regulator valve, Modulator, distributor cap, coil, and fuel filter, Fuel pressure is great.

Finally, I replaced the engine coolant temperature sensor and it ran great for about and hour and 20 minutes until it stalled out and did the exact same thing.
Anyone out there have any idea what is wrong?
