I have a large exterior canister filter, which is of course sold to be used with fish.
I wondered if I could use different media to better effect seeing as;
I clean the filter out and do full water change every week,
don’t really have time or space be able to wash filter media in same temperature water(killing the good bacteria, so I understand)
turtle poo from older turtles doesn’t seem to break down so easily (think its that plants and prawns in their diet)

At the mo’ I have:
50% sponge
40% ceramic doughnut things
10% carbon

Is there any point to the doughnuts if most of the waste removal seams to be physical rather than biological?

What benefit does the carbon have, how often should I change it (don’t like to ,its expensive!)?

Should I get more sponge?

Would a fluval ‘polish’ sponge prevent of the discolouration of water that sometimes occours at the end of each week, have you ever used one?

Do you think I should work harder to cultivate the bacteria?

I have a EHEIM Professional II 2126 Canister Filter. It is for my 55 gal salt water tank. I have 50 pounds of Live rock and 50 pounds of live sands. Also have a protein skimmer. about 8 fishes 50 tank cleaners (snails, hermit crab, star fish and shirmp). Probably some corals later. What media should I put in my canister filter? EHFIMECH, EHFISUBSTRAT, and carbon filter pads? what else? or what is better for my tank?

I have 55 gallon Discus tank with 7 adult Discus. I just bought a canister filter that came with the following – Sponge – CarbonMax – Zeo Wonder – Spike Balls Mini. I have read that Carbon is bad for Discus and Cichilds and wonder what I might replace the CarbonMax with?

If i chopped up a pumice stone and put them in my canister filter would it be a good filter media and if i did would it put out anything into the water to change the PH of the water or increase the calcium and stuff like that

I have a canister filter with two trays/baskets. I was taught to have both filled with regular woolly filtration media with carbon packs embedded in the wool. Is this the best way to do it or would one tray with carbon and one tray with wool be better?

I have a 125g freshwater planted tank. I am using a Rena XP4 canister filter. What media should I put in it? It came with carbon, several form filter pads and some Bio Chem Stars.

I soon hope to start up a marine aquarium with a tank which is 36x15x12 (inches) and holds 100L. I am confused by all of the different filtration systems and wonder if anyone could give me any advice?

I have been told that if you want salt water fish, a protein skimmer is absolutely necessary but would I also need any other type, like an under-gravel filter or canister filter?

If I do need all three, how would I connect them and do I need extra equipment to get the water flowing?
